Record-Breaking Coffee Export Year for Ethiopia: 2024 Update
As Ethiopia’s coffee industry continues to break new ground, August 2024 stands out as a historic month for Ethiopian coffee exports. The Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority (ECTA) announced a record-breaking achievement: a staggering $196 million in coffee export revenue, the highest monthly revenue to date. This impressive milestone highlights the country’s success in meeting global demand and optimizing its coffee supply chain for improved efficiency.
Historic Performance in the 2024/25 Season
In August alone, Ethiopia shipped 42,322 tons of coffee, generating an unprecedented $196 million in revenue. This record-breaking month exceeded both volume and value targets, achieving 165% and 143% of the ECTA’s goals, respectively. These figures signal a strong season for Ethiopian coffee, with significant growth achieved by eliminating inefficiencies in the supply chain and facilitating smoother paths for exporters and international buyers alike.
This performance follows a similarly strong showing in July, when Ethiopia exported 40,532 tons of coffee—a 78% increase from the same month in the previous year. Altogether, the months of July and August saw the export of 82,853 tons of coffee, generating a combined $377 million in revenue for Ethiopia.
Growth Compared to Last Year
Compared to the same two-month period in 2023, Ethiopia’s coffee export volume increased by 66%, with revenue jumping by 41%. The remarkable growth illustrates both the rising global demand for Ethiopian coffee and the country’s effective response to meet that demand through streamlined processes. The Ethiopian coffee industry continues to evolve, with measures such as simplifying supply chains and promoting direct trade contributing to these new heights.
The Economic Impact of Ethiopian Coffee
Coffee has long been the backbone of Ethiopia’s economy. In the 2023/24 fiscal year alone, coffee exports brought in $1.43 billion, underscoring the industry’s critical role. With August’s record-setting performance, the 2024/25 season is on track to surpass previous years and further solidify coffee’s place as a cornerstone of Ethiopia’s economy.
